Abstract: Germplasm conservation in any of its from is basically carried out to serve mankind at present and in the future; so, the basic material must be completely available for breeding programs to benefit humans without political and economic barrier. This research was developed at the national cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) germplasm collection from the Research Institute of Tropical Root and Tuber Crops (INIVIT, Cuba, with 444 accessions, which were characterized according to the List of Descriptors. An evaluation to all genotypes was performed to test damages due to the main pest and diseases in the country, as well as, their effects on yield to select the best clones. Parameters of "in vitro" and field conservation were defined to show advantages of each method and feasibility to use a method as complement of the other. Most accessions were show to be native with a great genetic variability. No duplicates were seen according to evaluated parameters. Characterization, evaluation and conservation of germplasm bring about an increase in the genetic diversity of this crop in Cuba for breeding programs, and national and international germplasm exchange. |
